It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sheryl Lynn Hughes, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and dear friend, who left this world too soon on August 21, 2025, at the age of 64.
Sheryl was born August 24, 1960, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Clarence Gilbert Vandever and Patricia (Todd) Vandever. She was a 1978 graduate of Skidmore-Tynan High School and married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Douglas Hughes, on June 10, 1978.
Sheryl lived a life marked by love, laughter, and quiet joy. She was the heart of her home and the glue that held her family together — a steadfast partner to her beloved husband, Ronald, with whom she shared 47 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and simple pleasures.
She was the proud mother of three children, and nothing brought her more joy than watching them grow into the people they became. Her greatest delight, however, came in the form of her eight grandchildren, each of whom she adored beyond words. Sheryl found happiness in the everyday — folding laundry with care, keeping a tidy home, and making every space feel like love lived there. Whether she was cooking dinner or soaking up the sun in the pool, she knew all too well that life didn’t need to be extravagant to be meaningful.
She treasured long phone calls with her mom, her kids, and her dear friend Diane — conversations that could stretch for hours and covered everything from the small happenings of the day to the deep matters of the heart. Their laughter and connection were a lifeline of joy in her world.
In her honor, may we all slow down, call the ones we love, keep our homes full of warmth, and never miss a chance to float in the sun.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Gilbert Vandever, her husband's parents, who loved her as their own, Rollin and Florence Hughes, and her dear, life-long friend, Teresa Schubert.
Sheryl's contagious laugh and beautiful smile will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind so many to cherish the fond memories of her love and laughter, including her husband, Ronald Hughes; her three children, Jason Hughes, Candiss Smith, and Cara Troell; Sons of love, Joshua Smith and Teddy Troell; Daughters of love, Jessica Hughes and Jennifer Yang; her mother, Patricia Duge; her siblings, Brenda Vandever, Debbie Algood, and Gilbert Vandever; her grandchildren, Cyley Smith, Colton Troell, Chloe Smith, Connor Troell, Joscelyn Hughes, Jameson Hughes, Harlow Yang, and Story Yang; and her numerous nieces and nephews.
The pallbearers are Jason Hughes, Josh Smith, Teddy Troell, Gavin Vandever, Colton Troell, and Connor Troell. Honorary pallbearers are Gilbert Vandever, Garrett Vandever, and Jameson Hughes.
A viewing will be held at Oak Park Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, August 25, 2025, from 3-7 pm, and a graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 9:30 am for close friends and family.
