Ruben Mireles Sylva Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Ruben “Grandpa” Mireles Sylva

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved…” — Mark 16:16

Ruben Mireles Sylva, age 80, born June 22, 1945, entered eternal rest on May 20, 2026, after enduring illnesses connected to his military service during the Vietnam War. At the young age of 20, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during one of the most difficult periods in American history.

Ruben was born in Beeville, Texas, to Gilberto and Lenora Sylva. God blessed Ruben with a spirit of endurance and hard work. Throughout his life, Ruben was known for his strong work ethic and determination. He was a man who loved to work with his hands and spent much of his life in construction, heavy equipment operation, and long-distance trucking. His iconic big red Kenworth 18-wheeler became part of his story — a reflection of the miles he traveled and the sacrifices he made throughout his life.

He was married to Gloria Chapa Sylva for 58 years. Together they raised a large family that includes their children: Ruben (“Mano”) Sylva Jr., Jimmy (“Bibi”) Sylva (Carolynn), Rey (“Lolo”) Sylva (Robin), Amy (“Hita”) Sylva, and Jeffrey Sylva (Ynes).

Ruben also held a special place in his heart for his bonus daughter, Isabel Martinez, and her daughter, Nyla (“Nic”) Simmons. Isabel and Nic lovingly spoiled him, and despite his strong nature, he always listened to them. Nic also helped care for Ruben during difficult times, offering him compassion, comfort, and support that meant so much to him and the family.

Ruben leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren — Matthew, Sara, Elora, Jordan, Jenna, Jeffrey Ryan, and Carter — and three cherished great-grandchildren, Lydia, Henry, and Christian. He is also survived by his sister, Ida Jones, along with many beloved nieces and nephews: Gilbert Jr., Sarah, Nora, Terry, Gerald, Chris, and Michael.

Ruben also shared a special bond with his bonus grandchildren, Austin (“Austin Brown”) and Alexa, who brought additional joy, laughter, and companionship into his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto and Lenora Sylva; his aunt Teresa (“China”) Valdez; his sister, Rose Cook; his brother, Gilbert (“June”) Sylva; and his nephew, James (“Jaime”) Garza.

Ruben also deeply cherished his beloved dog, Bear, whose companionship brought him comfort through life’s difficult seasons.

His family would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to his loving and caring caretakers, Elizabeth Camacho and Juana Aguirre, who quickly became like extended family through the compassion, kindness, and care they showed Ruben during difficult times in his life.

Most importantly, on September 9, 2012, Ruben surrendered his life to Christ. He faithfully worshipped at East Side Church of Christ in Beeville, where he found spiritual encouragement, fellowship, and strength in his faith. His family finds peace and comfort in God’s promise of eternal life and prays that Ruben is now resting in the loving arms of his Savior, free from pain and suffering.

Visitation will be held from 3-8 pm on Friday, June 5th and a prayer service celebrating Ruben’s life and faith will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 5th, at Oak Park Memorial Chapel in Beeville and will be led by Daniel Garza.

A church service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 6th, at East Side Church of Christ and will be officiated by David Todd, with burial immediately following at Beeville Memorial Park.

Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Oak Park Memorial Chapel.

Though his earthly journey has ended, the memories, sacrifices, and enduring spirit Ruben leaves behind will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

— John 15:13 (NKJV)
