Laura (Kunde) Burney Obituary

Laura (Kunde) Burney, AKA Momma, Ranny, Cotton, Baby, Aunt Cot, & Kitten, passed away on December 12, 2023, at her assisted living home.  She was 88 years.

Laura was born October 21, 1935, to James “Jimmy’ Kunde and Rosalie “Sally” (Beutnagel) Kunde in Nell, TX. She attended school in Nell, then at Pawnee, Tx. Laura met her first husband, Clifford L. Olson at school in Pawnee. They were married on April 21, 1956, in Pawnee. After marriage, they lived shortly in Austin, TX, then moved to San Antonio where their three children were born and raised. After Clifford’s death, March 2, 1973, Laura later married a family friend, Bruce G. Burney.  After living in San Antonio, Laura and Bruce moved to Coy City, TX, where Bruce later passed away, February 6, 1998.  Laura continued to live in Coy City until she moved to Beeville in November 2018, to be near her daughter and family, due to health issues. In February 2021 she moved to 801 Gramman for Residential Care/Assisted Living.

Laura was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Karnes City, then Eastside Church of Christ in Beeville, until her health no longer permitted her to attend. Laura was best known for her sense of humor and her ability to never meet a stranger.  She could walk up to anyone, friend, or stranger, and start a conversation or tell a joke.  Laura loved gardening. Her yard was always immaculate and looked like something out of a magazine. She also loved sharing her plant clippings with friends, as well as people who stopped to compliment her yard.

Laura was a strong woman and hard worker. She could lift 50-pound bags of feed or swing a grubbing hoe with a vengeance. Her first job was at Frost Bank, then later took a leave of absence to be a wife and full-time mother. After her children were in school, she went back to work at Frost Bank until her second marriage and moved to Coy City. Later in life, she became a part-time substitute mail carrier. She loved this job because she was able to drive all over Karnes County and meet so many new people.  Laura would also drive all over Texas to attend her grandchildren’s, and later her great-grandchildren’s, sporting events. She was a very loud spectator. Everyone in the stands knew when Ranny was there. Laura also loved to play dominoes (she was hard to beat) and cards.  She enjoyed the friendships she had in those groups.

Laura was proceeded in death by her parents, Jimmy and Sally Kunde; her husbands, Clifford Olson and Bruce Burney.; Mother-in-law, Margaret Olson; brother-in-law, Gene Rippstein, and a dear cousin Marilynn Wright.

Laura leaves behind her cherished children, Beverly (Jimmy) Moore of Beeville, Michael (Pam) Olson of Pipe Creek, Barton (Mary Frances) Olson of Nell; two sisters Dorothy Rippstein of Karnes City, Mary (Bill) Krause of Waco; Seven grandchildren Tamara (Steven) Scotten of Beeville, Justin (Heather) Moore of Beeville, Dr. Jacquelin (Joel) Castillo of Poth, Kyle (Selena) of Bangor Maine, Jennifer (Cameron) Phillips of Budapest, Hungary, Aimee Huntsinger of Abilene, Justin (Ginna) Niksich of Sweetwater; and 14 great grandchildren.

A very special thanks to the staff at Gramman. They loved Laura and took such good care of her while she lived there, and the last few months of her life, they gave her exceptional personal care until her death.  These ladies had a very special place in Laura’s heart and our family will always be in their debt.

In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to Alzheimer’s Association in her name.
