Carie Rance Tullis of George West, known to those who loved him as Marlo and Papa Marlo, passed away on May 5, 2026, at the age of 77 after a long battle with cancer. Born on Christmas Eve in 1948 to Luther and Eva Tullis, Carie spent most of his life right where he belonged — in Three Rivers, Texas — before he and Bettie built their forever home in George West in 2017.
If you really want to understand Carie Tullis, there are two things you should know. First, he loved everything outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening. Carie had a true gift when it came to growing things.
Second, and above all else, he loved Bettie. For 44 years, he stood faithfully by her side, just as anyone who knew them would expect. Together, they spent many of their days enjoying trips to Eagle Pass, where they loved to gamble and simply be together.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Eva Tullis.
Carie is survived by his wife, Bettie Tullis; his sister, Bess (Leslie) Wernli; his bonus sons, Bob (Raegan, aka “Frog”) Strause and David (Pam) Strause; his grandchildren, Adam (Courtney) Strause, Samantha Strause and Kiel Hoffman, Ashton Schubert, Dallan Cheek and Denham Cheek; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey Worsham, Owen Strause and Clare Strause.
Papa Marlo was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A private service will be held for family at the Three Rivers Cemetery.
