Abel Vargas, Jr. Obituary

Abel Vargas, Jr., 86, of Salinas, California entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

Abel (Abe) was born in Beeville, Texas on April 16, 1937, and raised there until he went off to college for one year.  In 1959 he began a 20-year career in the United States Marine Corps. He was extremely proud to serve this nation and especially in the Marine Corps.  He made it known by ALWAYS having a USMC decal on EVERYTHING, as well as having his children learn and know the Marine Corps Hymn as youngsters. His last doorbell was…Yes, the Marine Corps Hymn.

Abe’s work ethic was incredibly intense. He worked most of those Marine Corp years in the new age of computers. As technology was just beginning with IBM in the 1960’s, he would have full knowledge of how they operated and generated information. Upon retirement, IBM offered him work in Mexico as an instructor. After the Marine Corps career was over, he wanted to relax and do something different. He helped a friend manage a Straw Hat Pizza restaurant in Barstow, CA. Once he moved to Monterey County, he managed a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant before starting his company selling NCOA insurance to military personnel.  He then began a new business with several partners called Monterey Bay Medical Waste. It was the first medical waste company in Monterey County.

Once he was completely retired, he focused mainly on his love for golf and the traveling that came with it.  He was introduced to golf in 1966 when he met up with his first friend in the Marine Corps, Mr. Ralph Eason, and they were both stationed in Hawaii.  He made several friends through golfing and traveled to places such as North & South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and even Okinawa, Japan.

Other sports he watched on TV and attended were baseball (San Francisco Giants) and football (His beloved Dallas Cowboys). Though he never played tennis, it was somehow one of his favorite things to watch on TV.

Abe loved his family and enjoyed special celebrations with them, as well as camping trips and sporting events with his grandchildren. His work ethic is the thing most remembered by his grandchildren. His children and grandchildren followed in his footsteps and made him very proud.

Abe was preceded in death by his parents: Abel Vargas, Sr. and Filomena Vargas, and two brothers: Lionel Vargas and David Vargas.  He is survived by his Sweetheart: Kathy Rowden; two daughters: Brenda Powers (Matt) of La Grange, TX; Cindy Reid (Tom) of Castaic, CA; three sons: Abel Vargas, III of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Eric Mahlum (Becky) of Portland, OR; Adam Mahlum (Liz) of Scappoose, OR; one brother: Daniel Vargas (Helga) of Arnaudville, LA and one sister: Laurie Soliz of Harlingen, TX; 14 Grandchildren: Shannon (Reuben) Valdez, Lindzi (Sean Powers), L.J. Lumpkin (Guzel), Bree Cano, Bailey Reid, Brandi Reid, Abel Vargas, IV (Susie), Mikell (Jessika) Vargas, Robert Vargas, Mitchell Mahlum, Claire Mahlum, Elise Mahlum, Elissa Mahlum and Kammy Mahlum; 14 Great-Grandchildren: Shayne, Colby, Jenivieve and Gwendalyn Valdez; Zackary, Brody and Wesley Powers; Marcel and Maya Lumpkin, Abel Vargas, V, Alena and Aace Vargas; Dominik and Katalina Vargas; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
